Missouri-Kansas Border War In-Person
In 1854, Congress opened up the Kansas Territory for settlement. Importantly, Congress declared that rather than federal law determining whether slavery would be allowed in Kansas, the settlers themselves would make the decision. Fearing that Kansas would become a free state, thousands of Missourians flocked to the territory to claim land and vote in territorial elections. Over the next few years, violence and bloodshed across the Kansas-Missouri border made national headlines and contributed to the outbreak of the Civil War. Historian and Curator Nick Sacco (Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site) will discuss "Bleeding Kansas" and the fierce fighting between Jayhawkers and Bushwackers along the border.
